Government New Boiler Scheme Proves Efficient
The government’s boiler scheme for England which reduces the cost of replacing an old boiler with a more efficient one has seen a good take-up from homeowners and landlords.
The boiler scrappage scheme offers a £400 voucher for homeowners and landlords, which can be put towards to cost of upgrading their boiler. The scheme is open to individuals who own their homes or landlords who rent property, but housing associations, social landlords and boiler installers are not eligible.
To be eligible for the scheme, homeowners and landlords need to have a working boiler which is G-rated for efficiency. However, for property owners over 60, the boiler does not have to work.
The government claims the boiler scheme helps homes reduce their energy costs, as well as reduce their carbon footprint and support jobs in this sector. So far, 54,758 of these vouchers have been claimed and there are 70,000 still available to property owners.
In total, there are about 3.5 million houses in England with the least efficient types of boiler, BBC News has reported. The boiler scheme is being managed by the Energy Savings Trust (EST), which stated it has had 400,000 enquiries about the scheme.
Most of the claims for the boiler vouchers by property owners have been made in the south east and north west of England. The fewest requests for boiler scrappage vouchers have been made in the north east.
Fraser Winterbottom, of the EST said: “There are still thousands more vouchers to be claimed.”
